In my travels I hear a lot of people talking about “our fate”. The fate of the economy, the fate of our government, the fate of our families, and the list goes on. It seems everyone is focused on fate. What is fate? Here is what I found on dictionary.com:
1 . something that unavoidably befalls a person; fortune; lot: It is always his fate to be left behind.
2. the universal principle or ultimate agency by which the order of things is presumably prescribed; the decreed cause of events; time: Fate decreed that they would never meet again.
3. that which is inevitably predetermined; destiny: Death is our ineluctable fate.
4. a prophetic declaration of what must be: The oracle pronounced their fate.
5. death, destruction, or ruin.
So here we find ourselves focused on fate and yet by its definition, it doesn’t sound like we can do much about it….so why focus on it? I think at the root of our stressing over “fate” is something deeper, in that we have lost hope in the future. We are worried, frightened, and uncertain about life, deep within our core is a silent fear that we try to hide, a cold hand of doubt is gripping us….maybe we don’t control what we thought we did, maybe our career, our family, our government, and our way of life is not as simple as we thought…..
Maybe our “fate” rests in the hands of God and we just don’t know what to do. It’s hard not being afraid when you don’t know how to relate to the nature of the vary thing that is in control. Maybe we could all benefit from more time spent trying to connect to the heart of the creator and less time spent worrying about “our fate”.
